Yellow Quinoa & Lentil shebang

It’s fall and we’re all falling down. Tripping on fallen birds nests (without any birds in them!!), blowing away in the wind, walking on crispy leaves instead of sunshine. It’s a trip, it’s a fall, it’s orange, yellow, red, and we love it. 

It’s the season for the cozy things like Netflix and chill on a whole other level and obviously cozy, warm, comforting food.

Heat it up from the inside (before the Netflix and chilling maybe…) with this super simple, spicy, yummy turmeric and curry quinoa with lentils. Eat it as a side or as a meal, I made a big portion and killed that for lunch. It was a brutal battle. RIP beloved grains and spices.

All you need is
1 cup of Quinoa
1 cup of Lentils
2 1/2 cups of water
Salt
Pepper
Turmeric
Curry Powder
Cayenne Pepper

Simply boil the water and turn it down to medium after it starts boiling. Cook the quinoa with the lentils for about 15 minutes, until all the water is soaked up. Add all your spices while the quinoa and lentils are cooking. I don’t have the exact measurements for the spices, go after your taste buds. Some like it hot, some like it bland and boring. No, but spice it up after your preference. The turmeric will give the dish this nice yellow color, which is cute if you’re into yellow. I added some kale to get in those daily greens as well.

There you go, done! Simple as a bird flapping it’s wings in the am. Delicious and satisfying. Nice little shebang! I don’t know what the word shebang means but in my mind it’s a word that expresses a loud shout of joy, like “Oh man, this shit is shebaaang!”.

Snack attack at SunCafe

Happy Saturday beautiful people!

The Halloween spirit is upon us and the weather is playing tricks on us, acting bipolar with the sudden shift from hot, to cloudy, to rain, to cold, to hot again, and the loop goes on. Personally, I love me some cozy cloudy weather once in a while. The sun is nice but sometimes you just want to be stuck inside not doing shit and don’t feel bad about it.

Enough small talk and let’s get to the juicy point of this post! Started my day in the crisp 9 AM morning at SunCafe in Studio City, LA. Chef and owner of SunCafe, Ronald Russell had a cooking class where he showed how to make easy peasy raw vegan snacks. He went from sweet to savory with a chocolate mousse, feta dip, zucchini hummus, green dip, zucchini chips and chocolate truffles. Everything raw, everything vegan, everything delicious. What raw food means is basically that no food is heated above 118 degrees F. I personally don’t follow a raw vegan diet because I like that cooked food when the cold is creeping in, but as long as you follow a vegan diet, I’m just encouraging you to do your thing! Raw food is also an excellent way to make amazing vegan desserts, and these type of snacks. Everything was obviously delicious and so simple to make, but I was so impressed by the feta dip. It tasted exactly like a feta cheese dip! But with no cheese!! Yes it’s possible, it’s amazing, and it makes a vegan life so damn simple.

To sum it up, I had a great morning with some awesome snacking to start my day with. Left the class feeling inspired and ready to chef it up like curry on the court!

Let’s push this Gratitude thing again

Gratitude, being grateful, say thanks, appreciate what you have, bla bla… We always hear this. Everyone is telling us to be grateful. I’ve said it before and I will definitely say it again, right now actually. Be grateful. There, I said it! Wohoo!

I can’t push this enough, but gratitude is the key component to a happy life, period. It doesn’t matter what you want in life or where you want to be. If you can’t stop for a second, spin around and take a long nice look, up and down, at the beautiful things you have in life you’re never going to go anywhere. You might not have flashy cars, or gold chains so long 2 Chainz would get embarrassed, but you do have a lot in your life that deserves to be acknowledged and to be grateful for. Not that I would want to have gold chains draping down on the streets when I walk, but you get the point. I mean, it would be a very good alternative to a weapon in any self defense situation… Taking your chain and swinging it around like a lasso, knocking the shit out of the little fucker trying to attack you. So yes, on second thoughts, I might invest in some long ass gold chains in the future. Okay, totally off topic!!

Do you have a roof over your head? Did you slam in some food in your mouth today? You took a shower today? Did you shake your ass like you wanted it to fall off? You have people who make you happy? Did your parrot learn how to say “Damn, girl!”?

I really like how this 2 Chainz theme is occurring throughout this post, and I also hope you see the simple point of gratitude. Life is life, you didn’t choose your life or your circumstances, you just popped out one day and was like “Oh, shit, okay, I’m a living thing now. Cool.” The power you do have is what you choose to make out of your situation. Gratitude is the easiest way to embrace the fact that you, just YOU are alive! And on top of that you have plenty of things that you can, and should be grateful for. Simple things, anything. You’re breathing, that’s a pretty huge deal! Thanks for oxygen! Make it a habit to say thank you every day! Do like 2 Chainz! Wake up, and win! Bam bam bam!

Tocaya Organica

I’m obsessed with burritos! Burritos, and guacamole, and spicy salsa. Mexican food is the bomb. Not that burritos is a legit Mexican food, at least not what I’ve heard…but I might be wrong. Well, it’s delicious and I love me some Mexican food any time, any day.

Filled my tummy at Tocaya Organica in Venice this afternoon. Everything on the menu is vegan and you can add extra vegan and non vegan protein and cheese to every meal. Like yo, that’s pretty sweet! Adding pomegranate to guacamole, man, that combination tastes like some sweet love making. Love at first bite.

Super cute little place with a lot of different options of Mexican cousin. Happy hour every week day with food and drinks. The drink menu is pretty exotic as well with watermelon sangria and blood orange mimosas. Unfortunately for me I’m on steroids right now (seriously, yes… I’ll talk about that in another post) and I don’t want to mix that up with alcohol. Who knows what will happen. Linnéa The Hulk would emerge or something. No, today I was just trying to enjoy some Mexican food, and I sure did!

I’m going to admit that I’m very lazy when it comes to cooking. I do like to cook, it has some kind of soothing element to it, but the best foods are the ones that goes quick and easy and tastes delicious. Win win situation all day man!!

So this easy little wrap, or more like a tortilla sandwich thingy took me like 15 minutes, if even that, to wrap up. Wrap up..heheh. Oh wow, my jokes are terrible…

I don’t follow any recipes when I cook, not for the most part. Literally just take a bunch of veggies of your preference and saute them nicely in a pan with a little coconut or olive oil. I fried up some broccoli, spinach, carrots and kale. Okay, an absolute crucial part when making your veggies; SPICE THEM UP! Seriously, spice the shit out of your veggies! Make them taste good! Use plenty off spices, improvise, don’t be scared!! So yes, spice those bad boys up and while you’re frying your vegetables, heat up some sweet potatoes and lightly toast the bread in the oven. The tortilla-ish bread I used is the Ezekiel bread which is made out of straight up grains. Healthy and gluten free and yummy and doesn’t leave you with a doughy heavy feeling.

When that’s done you simply put it all together. I like to have a “wet” base on my bread to make all the veggies “stick” more easy. I just used some hummus, smacked it up all over that half side of the tortilla and made my veggies and sweet potatoes come along together in a perfect harmony. BAM, you’re done. BAM, eat that shit.

If you’re that kind of person who says they can never go vegan because “vegans only eat lettuce and carrots” (which first of all is a stupid claim, but whatever), well let me introduce you to this vegan fast food spot in Hollywood called Doomie’s Home Cookin’. Damn Daniel, and Daniella, and Carl, this place is amazing!! Not only is everything on the menu completely vegan, but it legit tastes like real meat. It tasted so real that I thought  Ashton Kutcher would jump out from a little hiding spot with cameras and his camera crew yelling “YOU’VE GOT PUNK’D!!!! HAHAHA”, and there I would sit, with tears slowly forming in my eyes realizing this terrible crime I’ve just committed, and actually enjoyed…Luckily that didn’t happen! There’s no dead animals in my system.

Doomie’s Home Cookin’ offers a variety of standard comfort food and junk food. They’ve got burgers, tacos, mac n’ cheese, different kinds of fries, wings, just all that kind of stuff. Oh, and yes, they’ve also got a huge selection of desserts. We tried the peanut butter and bacon burger which I HIGHLY recommend! It might sound weird, but no man, it was good. You got a little cup of jelly on the side which you smacked in between those buns and damn, a real food experience right there. We also tried the animal fries, chili mac n’ cheese and nachos. All of it was delicious, but that peanut butter bacon burger, heads down my favorite! We also tried their creme brule which was just as jiggly as a normal creme brule. How they did that, only a magician would know. They’re known for their double Big Mac, which I unfortunately didn’t have room for in my tummy, but hey, now I have a solid reason to go there again.

So yeah, to sum it all up, get your asses over there and be prepared to have your minds blown.

Things to do everyday

Every day is certainly different, and not all days will be a ride on fluffy clouds surrounded by pink dolphins and camouflaged monkeys. Some days will be a shit show as soon as you wake up and you feel like those fluffy clouds are suffocating you. This is life, things can’t be 100 all the time, but things can be good. It just takes a little effort, and once you’ve made these small things a habit you will have a good day, you might even make a shit show into a banger.

  • Be grateful. When you wake up from a lovely dream by that annoying alarm clock shit sucks, but take some time to just lay there in your bed and think about 3 things (or more) that you are truly grateful for. It can be the most simple things. “I’m grateful for being alive, that I won the taco eating competition yesterday without a stomach ache, or whatever you are truly grateful for!
  • Make a cocky ass boss listand read it out loud everyday. Make a list where you write down everything that makes you a bad ass. This list is just for you so seriously write down everything that you like about yourself. It can be how shallow or how deep as you like. Just make sure to read it out loud to yourself, and believe it. Own yourself!!
  • Be kind and helpful to to others. Give to others! I’m not talking about handing out gifts to random people but I’m talking about the smallest things. Smile to people, say hello to strangers, help someone if you can offer them your help. To things for people without expecting anything in return. Trust me, this makes you feel good, and without even realizing it, good things will come back to you.
  • Appreciate the people in your life. Make it a habit to tell the people in your life how much you appreciate and love them. Make them feel special to be a part of your life. Send a text, give them a call, see them in person, just let them know how much they glorify your life.
  • Move you body. Stand up and shake dat ass! No, but move, exercise. You don’t have to runt a marathon everyday, but make sure you put your body in some kind of motion everyday. we all know that exercise releases endorphins and all that good good stress relief.
  • Eat the rainbow. Yes guys, you got to eat your veggies. Eat healthy in general. We all know how crappy we feel after eating massive amounts of sugar or fatty fast food. Just avoid that to the best of your ability. Don’t restrict yourself either though, because restriction usually leads to a major binge, and that’s probably the worst you can ever do.
  • Floss. Okay, I’m want to lie and say that I floss my grillz everyday, but no, I don’t. I do floss the majority of the week, but those days after a late night ain’t nobody got time for flossing… But, make it a habit! Take care of your teeth guys!

Alrighty! So here’s a few tips and tricks that can make a bad day a little better, and might even turn you day into a great day. Bottom line, be a good person, a genuine, good-hearted person. Be grateful, show appreciation. That’s the best things you can do, everyday.

Lentil Linnéa

Is what I was called the other day whilst out with my friends. Fits me kinda accurately and it has a nice cling, aka sound to it.

Speaking of lentils, which I by the way haven’t been eating in a while, I decided to cook up some of those bad boys together with some sauteed veggies and sweet potatoes. Yum to the freakin um! Spiced them up nicely with a lot of Indian flavors and it tasted similar, not identical, to some of my moms dhal. I can never replicate my moms cooking how hard I would try, she’s that one of a kind you know.

To fail doesn’t mean that you are a failure. You are not a failure if you fail but take that failure to learn and to progress. Failure should be praised, it should be thought, and it should be appreciated.

The word “Failure”  and “Failing” is associated to negativity and a sense of worthlessness. Since we were small we have heard that if you fail you are no good, that failure is something you should avoid, and almost be ashamed of. Why do we teach our kids to fear, fear? We should encourage kids to fail, we should put ourselves through it because if we never fail how can we progress? When we keep doing things the exact same way we’ve always been doing it how can we ever become better than that? Humans need to keep walking forward, we need to see growth and results. We need to feel that we are accomplishing something, this is crucial for human well being. That’s why we see people who has been doing the same thing for years being miserable and stuck in a cycle of “just doing” and no growing. They haven’t taken any risks, they haven’t challenged themselves or been outside their comfort zone. Why is that? Well, the simple answer is basically that we are afraid to fail.

It’s time to change the concept of failure. It’s time to take failure form the negative side and embrace it over at the positives. Failure is key! Failure leads to progress! You have to make mistakes to learn form them, and become better. Failure should be your best friend, and your partner who backs you up when you made a mistake.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that I step out in the world acting like I’m the most confident lady out there not giving a flying fuck about messing up, making mistakes, and failing. It’s damn scary! And I have a lot of work to do in this area myself! The first step though is to start changing our mindset and how we deal with failure. Just get out there and fail a little! It ain’t going to kill you!

I’m way to tired to even follow my own advice about laughing in the mornings. That’s how sucky I can be sometimes. The only thing I can say this morning is to consume this bad boy aka ginger as often as possible, especially in the mornings! This little weird shit makes magic and does miracles. Good for your skin, your brain, the digestive system, aging, and the list goes on. Take a sprint to the nearest grocery store, buy a ton of ginger, and inhale these smooth fuckers.
